Overview

The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan, among compact crossovers is the only one to offer a distinct European flavor. It has a crisp handling and an elegantly tailored style. While the performance of this smooth turbocharged four-cylinder is only adequate, fuel economy is excellent. Every model comes with a host of technology features, such as a digital gauge, modern infotainment connectivity and driver-assistance functions. While the interior is a bit more sedately designed, it is still spacious and accommodating for both passengers and cargo. A third row is an optional feature, which is only available on the Mitsubishi Outlander in this segment. The Tiguan is a sporty car that’s fun to drive.

What is New in 2023?

It’s understandable that the Tiguan will see very little changes in 2023 after its thorough refresh for the 2022 model. The SE R-Line Black trim will feature a new wheel design of 19-inches and the Tiguan USB-C ports are now capable of 45W charging.

Which one to buy and its price?

Prices for the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan start at $28,245 but can go up to $38,975 based on trim and options.

The SE trim, which is the middle-range trim, adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear liftgate that can be operated by power, lane-keeping assistance, and a new semi-autonomous mode. The SE trim comes with a panoramic sunroof, which costs $1200. It may be worth it for those who enjoy catching some rays as they drive.

Front-wheel drive is the standard, but Volkswagen’s 4Motion system for all-wheel-drive is an option. The 2023 Tiguan is a fun, athletic SUV, with a smooth engine and an automatic transmission that works well together. It’s not fast like most of its rivals, but it compensates for this with a taut, responsive ride and nimble handling. The Tiguan’s brake pedal is soft and doesn’t match up to the firm, progressive pedals we enjoy in a data-vars-ga call-to action=”other members of VW’s family tree” data varsga outbound  The brake pedals on the Tiguan are soft, and they don’t compare to those of other VW family members . The Tiguan’s zero-to-60 mph time was rather slow. The Tiguan isn’t as slow on the road as the test results suggest. It has enough low-end grunt for a pleasant ride around town. The only time the Tiguan will make you wish for more power is when you merge onto the highway.

Fuel economy and real-world MPG

According to the EPA, the model with front-wheel drive will have the best fuel economy. It can achieve up to 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. All-wheel drive reduces these numbers to 22 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway. The top-spec SEL R-Line has ratings that are 1 mpg lower in both metrics. We’ll update the story when we test the Tiguan in our 75-mph highway-fuel-economy tests. Visit the EPA website for more information on the Tiguan fuel economy.

Interior Comfort and Cargo

The interior of the Tiguan is classic Volkswagen. It is functional and simple, but not very stylish. The Tiguan has the most legroom for the second row of seats. Standard on the Tiguan is cloth seating with partial power adjustment of the front seats. The more expensive versions offer full power adjustments for the driver and faux leather seating. They also have a panoramic roof. The Tiguan’s cargo space is only 12 cubic feet behind the third row when it’s in use. The Tiguan has a cargo space that is about average for this class when the third row is folded. We could fit 19 carry-on bags in the Tiguan with all seats folded. This is less than the Honda Civic.

Connectivity and Infotainment

Volkswagen’s infotainment is a sleek system, but it has touch-sensitive controls that are integrated into the large glass screen. We found this difficult to use. Apple CarPlay or Android Auto are included as standard, so drivers can use their smartphones’ interface instead of Volkswagen’s. A Wi-Fi hotspot comes with the system. Audiophiles can opt for a 480-watt, nine-speaker Fender system. However, this is only available in the upper trim levels. All models feature either a 10.3-inch or 8.0-inch digital gauge that can be configured to show a wide range of information.
