Today is the day that I must take my SIM card from my current phone and insert it in a new device. It happens often and I am usually not bothered by it. Sometimes I love using my phone so much that I don’t want it to change my SIM card. Today is one such day.
The Google Pixel 7 Pro is the phone I am going to be leaving behind. It has been amazing over the past 21 days. Others have had less luck, so the phone is a little risky. Here are the reasons why I find it difficult to let go.
Severe worries
Before I tried the Pixel 7 Pro, I reviewed the Google Pixel 7. Although I had no major issues with the phone, it was not perfect. My woes weren’t as bad as Joe Maring’s Pixel 7 Pro problems. This is evident from the online comments and reviews. While I was content with my Pixel 7 Pro, I was more worried about the Pixel 7 Pro. It would be a disaster?
Three main areas were of concern to me. First, battery life. Second, bugs in Android 13 and finally, overall performance. Each of these will be addressed individually, but I want to share some information about how my phone is used. I don’t play any games and my phone is always connected to Wi-Fi during work week. I use many apps, including messaging apps and social apps. I browse with Chrome, make calls and connect to Bluetooth. I also take photos with my camera and use Google Maps to navigate. I also reply to emails.
According to Digital Wellbeing, I screen for between three and five hours per day. I have used the Pixel 7 Pro on several occasions where it was connected to either a Galaxy Watch 5, a Google Pixel Watch, and sometimes both simultaneously. It’s safe to say that the phone works well on a daily basis, even though I haven’t used it for gaming. The battery has lasted me for two days, despite all this.
I don’t remember ever having to give the battery a boost or giving it anxiety. Multiple days have passed where my battery was still at 60% when I went to bed. It used 40% between 8 a.m. and midnight. Even on days when I spent more than five hours on screen, the battery has not been below 20% at night. The Pixel 7 Pro’s battery performance has not only been satisfactory, but it has also been outstanding right from the beginning.
Bugs galore?
Concerned about the system stability of the Pixel 7 Pro, I wondered if Android13 or any other apps would be so buggy that they wouldn’t let me get things done. Android is very reliable and apps have not had any issues. I haven’t had to restart the phone to fix problems. I have not uninstalled or reinstalled any apps because of annoying bugs. It’s quite different from Joe’s experience with his Pixel 7 Pro.
Does this mean that the Pixel 7 Pro is faultless? Unfortunately, no. However, the problems that I have encountered are different to those experienced by others. Connectivity and call performance are the main problems I have encountered. The Pixel 7 Pro’s Wi-Fi range is poor compared to other phones and frequently drops the signal, while other phones (such the iPhone 14 Pro), are able to connect to it easily. Bluetooth connectivity is also shaky, with frequent drops and sometimes no connection at all.
All of this seems to affect calls, as the Bluetooth connection is often interrupted while a call is being made. Some calls have dropped out, possibly due to switching from voice over Wi-Fi to the network in the event that the Wi-Fi signal is lost. There have been times when my phone tried to connect but failed to do so. solved by a restart.
These connection issues are some of the most severe problems I have experienced with the Pixel 7 Pro. While they are unacceptable, they don’t always happen, so it is easier to forgive them when they do.
Everything that makes it unique
Although connectivity-related bugs can be annoying, it hasn’t stopped my love for the Pixel 7 Pro. This will not surprise you, but The camera is truly fantastic and has never failed me in any circumstance yet. The simple, but extremely flexible editing suite within Google Photos is a big part of this. I can edit photos until I like them. The only problem with the Pixel 7 Pro is the basic selfie camera and lack of editing options for selfies. This is even more true of the old Snapseed app.
The Pixel 7 Pro is more than just the camera. The design is excellent and the materials used are perfect. It is immediately identifiable as a Google Pixel phone because of its perfect shape and weight. It doesn’t feel awkward or ungainly. I prefer the Pro’s curved screen to the flat Pixel 7. Apart from the photo-editing options, I love the auto-translation features on YouTube and in messaging apps such as WhatsApp. Plus the cleanly designed Android 13 software.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Pixel 7 Pro’s battery life and stability. The camera is just as sharp as everyone claims it to be and the overall usability is excellent. It has been a firm favourite throughout the year, despite the connectivity issues that sometimes occur. I know that my SIM will be back in this phone as soon as possible. The fact that I have had a positive experience with the Pixel is a testament to the dangers of the device. There’s still the possibility that your phone will end up just like the one we reviewed.
