Xiaomi Plans to Increase Smartphone Sale in India through Retail Stores to Give Strong Competition to Samsung

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi plans to increase sales through retail stores in India. The company has been focusing on e-commerce websites for years. After falling behind South Korea’s Samsung, it is trying to increase its sales of smartphones. Smartphone sales have increased in the country in the last few years through e-commerce companies like Amazon and Flipkart. This has helped many smartphone companies like Xiaomi to strengthen their position in this fastest growing market in the world.

Because of this, Xiaomi has made preparations to increase sales through retail stores. The company’s India unit head, Muralikrishnan B, said, “Our offline share is much lower than online. Data from market research firm Counterpoint shows that this year Xiaomi Only 34 per cent of total sales came from retail stores. In comparison, Samsung’s offline sales are 57 percent. Xiaomi has a network of around 18,000 stores. The company plans to increase it. It is also preparing to sell other products like TVs and security cameras in these stores. The company believes that there is less competition in these products. Difficulties are increasing for Xiaomi’s business in India. The company is facing challenges like loss of market share and regulatory strictures. Xiaomi has decided to restructure its unit in the country. Because of this, workers are also being retrenched from the company.

According to a media report, Xiaomi had around 1,500 workers in the country earlier this year. The company has recently laid off around 30 workers. It may retrench again soon. The market share of the company has decreased in the last few months. Because of this, it is taking measures like better utilization of its resources and reducing expenses. The company is also suffering due to low presence in the category of affordable smartphones.
