Overview

The M4 comes with the two-door version . The BMW M4 excels in two key areas: power and grip. Standard M4 models come with rear-wheel-drive, a 6-speed manual transmission and a 473-hp, twin-turbo, inline-six-cylinder engine. M4 Competition versions have 503-horsepower. The eight-speed auto transmission is available on both models. It’s the only one that comes with the optional xDrive system. The 543-hp CSL track-attack model is available without the rear seat to save weight. Putting that complaint aside, it’s clear the M4 is a special vehicle. The M4’s power, torque and manual transmission are all reminiscent of the old M cars.

What’s new for 2023?

BMW has added the limited-edition CSL track-focused BMW M4 model to its lineup. The M4 CSL has 40 horsepower more than the M4 Competition, for a total of 543 horses. It also claims to have lost 240 pounds compared with the Comp version. As part of the mass-reduction efforts, rear seats in the coupe were sacrificed. Carbon fiber seats, lightweight carbon fiber roofs, hoods, and trunks, as well as a titanium exhaust, are also responsible for weight reduction. Many of the suspension bits have been replaced with stiffer pieces, including the engine-and-transmission mounts, and the lighter 19- and 20-inch staggered wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R track tires.

Which one to buy and its price?

Price of the BMW M4 2023 starts at $75695 and can go up to $140895 depending on trim and options.

The M4 Competition is worth the extra money for a variety of reasons, such as its extra horsepower and torque or the all-wheel drive. We’d still choose the M4 regular for a very good reason: it’s the only model that has a manual transmission. We’d choose the extra-supportive and lightweight M Carbon bucket seats, as well as M Drive Professional (onboard lap timer and drift analyzer), and the M Driver’s Package which unlocks an increased top speed as well as includes a class on high-performance driving.

Performance of the Engine, Transmission and Performance

In the tests, shot from 0-60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. However, it only comes with an eight-speed auto transmission.  This helps to compensate for the lack of a manual transmission option. The all-wheel-drive M4 Competition was able to shave a whole second off of the standard car’s time for 60 mph at our test track. The CSL is limited to 1000 units and has 543 horsepower. It uses an eight-speed auto with rear-wheel-drive. Each M4 is equipped with adaptive dampers and adjustable brake pedal feel. The exhaust system can also be electronically controlled to increase the volume in Sport or Sport Plus mode. M Sound can be pressed at any time to reduce the volume. BMW offers a plethora of drive-mode options that can dilute what BMW engineers intended. BMW improved the steering of the coupe, but don’t expect to get the same feedback as a two-door Porsche. The M4 has 18-inch wheels in front, and 19-inchers at the rear. M4 Competition and CSL have staggered sets of 20-inch wheels in front and 19-inchers at the back. The M4 has a carbon fiber roof which reduces the center of gravity. It can also be fitted with fade-resistant carbon ceramic brakes.

Fuel economy and real-world MPG

The M4 has a fuel economy rating of up to 16 mpg for city driving and 23 mpg for highway driving. The M4’s fuel economy was slightly below the EPA estimate during , when we drove 75 mph on our fuel-economy route. Visit the EPA website for more information on the M4’s fuel efficiency.

Interior Comfort and Cargo

The M4 is a 4-series with the same layout and space for passengers. However, the M4 features a number of unique materials as well as some options inspired by racing. The thick-rimmed wheel has two red buttons that allow you to customize the M drive mode. Carbon-fiber trim and long paddle shifters mounted to the steering column can be added to the cabin. They can also be ordered with ventilation, which is a first for an M4. It has an inch more legroom. The convertible bodystyle unlocks unlimited headroom. Simply lower the retractable cloth top. The M4 CSL limited edition is only a two-seater, but it is a model focused on track driving that uses weight-reduction techniques.

Connectivity and Infotainment

The M4 comes with an infotainment unit that is sleek and stylish, featuring a 12.3-inch touchscreen. The system has a variety of control options, including buttons on steering wheels, rotary controllers and buttons in the center console, as well as voice commands.  For those who prefer more advanced features, there are many options available, including gesture controls, Wi-Fi hotspots that require a subscription, and wireless charging pads.
