Overview
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma looks ready to compete with mid-size rivals like the Chevy Canyon and Ford Ranger. The interior of the new Taco is also modern, featuring a sleek aesthetic and crisp digital displays. Tacoma’s lineup offers more options than other alternatives. It includes two different cab and bed configurations. The new turbocharged 4-cylinder engine has different output levels. The hybrid iForce Max is the most powerful, with 326 horsepower and more torque than any other competitor. This setup is standard for the new Trailhunter trim, which is geared towards overlanding, and the TRD Pro, the highest-end off-roader. The majority of models have also swapped the old-fashioned leaf spring rear suspension with more advanced coil springs. This is another sign of Tacoma’s competitiveness.
What’s new for 2024?
The Tacoma will be completely redesigned in 2024, marking the fourth generation of the mid-size truck. The new Taco inherits a body-on frame TNGA platform that was shared with the recently redesigned Toyota Tundra. It also receives updated engines, more modern features and a larger selection of trims. This includes the newly-introduced Trailhunter, which is geared toward people who love overlanding.
Toyota has not yet revealed pricing information for the 2024 Tacoma line. This is expected to come later this year closer to the time when the trucks will be on sale in the fourth quarter. The Trailhunter and TRD Pro trim levels will be available in spring next year, but the availability of the hybrid engine is a factor that has delayed their arrival.
Performance of the Engine, Transmission and Performance
Every Tacoma is powered by a turbocharged, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. The engine is available in a variety of forms, and can be paired with an automatic eight-speed transmission or manual six-speed transmission. Both rear- and 4-wheel drive is available. Only the entry-level SR gets the base 228-hp four-cylinder turbo engine. The rest of the lineup has iForce variants with up to 317 pound feet of torque and 278 horsepower. The iForce Max is the best with 465 pound feet and 326 horsepower. The hybrid system includes an electric motor located between the engine, transmission, and a nickel-metal-hydride battery. All Tacomas have a body on frame construction. However, the rear suspensions are different. The SR5, SR5 Extended Cab, and TRD PreRunner have leaf springs. All other models use coil springs for a smoother ride. Off-road models are a must for the Tacoma, which is known to be a dirt-loving vehicle. They also have some exclusive suspension parts. These include a standard detachable front anti-roll bar, and 2.5-inch unique dampers with remote reservoirs.
Payload and Towing Capacity
Toyota has not revealed the maximum towing and payload ratings for all Tacoma models, but iForce’s automatic powertrain can tow up to 6500 lbs. The hybrid iForce Max has a maximum towing capacity of 6000 pounds and can tow up to 1709 lbs.
Interior Comfort and Cargo
The redesigned Tacoma is a major improvement in terms of design and packaging. Dashboard features a nicer material, high-resolution screens, and traditional switchgear. Most Tacos come with a 7.0 inch digital gauge cluster. TRD Off Road models and above have a 12.3 inch all-digital display. The Limited and higher models come with a head-up display as standard, and these models are also equipped with heated and cooled seats in the front. The TRD Pro comes with an IsoDynamic Seat, which features an air-over oil system to control body movements on uneven surfaces. All models also benefit from an elevated seating position and similar added headroom. This means the driver doesn’t feel like they are sitting on the ground. The truck should be more comfortable for more people with a more adjustable steering wheel. The 2024 Tacoma, like its predecessors, is available in extended-cab body style (called XtraCab), and crew-cab body style (called Double Cab). The XtraCab is only available with a six foot cargo box, while the Double Cab can be ordered with either a longer or shorter five foot version.
Connectivity and Infotainment
Most Tacomas come with an 8.0-inch touchscreen as standard. In the Limited model, the larger 14.0-inch touchscreen is used. It’s also the focal point on the Trailhunter or TRD Pro. All models come with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto as standard. JBL audio systems and a wireless charging pad are optional. This system even comes with a Bluetooth speaker which can be removed from the dashboard.
Driver Assistance and Safety Features
The 2024 Tacoma comes with a wide range of driver assistance technology as standard, including automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning and blind-spot alert are available for an additional cost.
