Tech Knowledge: What will happen if a transmission line with millions of volts breaks? how far away the person standing will get the shock

Everyone must have seen the transmission line sometime or the other. If not, then you must have seen the picture somewhere on TV. Transmission lines transmit light, and it operates with millions of volts. Looking at the transmission line, at some point or the other you must have thought that what will happen if it breaks.

First of all, it is important to know that it is almost impossible to break the transmission line in normal condition. This is because it is made of aluminum conductor steel-reinforced (ACSR). Steel is given in the middle of the aluminum conductor, which helps in making it stronger.

Breakage of a transmission line is possible only when there are natural calamities. What will happen if a person is near the broken wire? If the high voltage wire is broken and fallen, then high voltage current spreads in its area.

Where this wire falls, it spreads around it. For example, if the conductor was transmitting 1 lakh power, then wherever it has fallen, it will be 80,000 volts at a little distance, 60,000 volts on going a little further, and so on. As far as there is power, on coming in contact with it, a person can get a shock as well as death.

Three things can happen when the conductor falls. The first one is that the conductor that has fallen should fall on another conductor. This is possible because there are many conductors at the same time, and if this happens then in its technical language it is called ‘line to line’ fault.

What is Line to Ground Fault?
Second, if this conductor falls on the ground, then it is called ‘line to ground fault’. Apart from this, even if this conductor is touching a tower, it is called ‘line to ground fault’.

If the conductor has fallen on the ground, or has fallen on another line, then it demands a lot of current from the supply station. That is, a lot of current starts flowing in the conductor. In such a situation, your copper loss will start. Disturbances will start in the system and there will be a danger of damage to the electric device.

We have heard that a closed path is necessary for current to flow. If there is a break in the close path, then the flow of current will stop.

Circuit break does not occur due to breaking of wire because the transformer from where the current is supplied is sending it to 3 phase and the neutral wire is grounded, that means the circuit is completed there itself. As soon as the wire breaks and touches the ground, it will get neutral and current will start flowing rapidly.
