San Francisco | About 2,000 Amazon workers are about to walkout in front of the company’s Seattle headquarters to protest layoffs and return to work. Amazon mandated its return-to-office policy from May 1, requiring employees to attend office at least three days per week. The e-commerce giant has laid off around 27,000 employees in two rounds.

Amazon Employees for Climate Justice (AECDJ) and Amazon Remote Advocacy Community Leaders Say, The Walkout Continues! Around 1,816 workers worldwide have pledged to walkout, with 873 in Seattle. Please join our 1,816 colleagues and pledge to walkout.

Employees should have a say in decisions that affect our lives, such as returning to work, etc.

An Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire that they are looking into this and will continue to do so.

We are pleased to see how the first month of more people back in the office has turned out, said a company spokesperson. Working with more energy, collaboration and connectivity is happening and we’ve heard this from a lot of employees and businesses around our offices.

We understand that adjusting back to the office is going to take a long time and many teams across the company are working hard to make it as easy as possible for employees, the spokesperson said.

However, thousands of corporate and tech workers are not ready to return to work and have joined an internal Slack channel to protest the policy.

This is about Amazon going in the wrong direction and losing trust, Amazon Employees for Climate Justice and Amazon Remote Advocacy said in a statement. We know what’s best for Amazon. Out-of-the-box thinking and employee voice is an important aspect of the culture that has turned Amazon into such a successful company, and we are trying to reinvigorate that.

Day 1 is a reference to a mantra given by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who steps down as CEO in 2021 but remains chairman.

Amazon employs more than 65,000 corporate employees in Seattle.
