The 2023 Porsche 911 Dakar should look great as a throwback to the golden age of rally Porsches. Porsche offers the option to have a Rothmans-inspired, classic graphics package that pays homage to the car that helped build the brand’s motorsport legend.
Two-tone Rallye Design paint in white and wheels in white are meant to bring back memories of the Porsche Porsche 911 that won the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally. However, Porsche has stated that it does not plan to race the new car in any future Dakar Rally or in any other race series. Achim Lamparter is Porsche’s chassis manager for both the 911 and 718 models.
The Dakar can be driven on 19-inch tires at its front and 20 at the back. It is 5 centimetres more than the standard 911. There are two distinct drive modes. Rallye mode adds a strong rear-wheel bias to all-wheel drive for speedy travel on loose surfaces such as sand or gravel. Off Road raises suspension 3 centimetres to remove rocks and other obstacles. At speeds greater than 170 km/h, it will fall to its normal height. These modes allow the wheels to slip as much as 20% on snow or loose terrain.

The Dakar does not have rear seats. These seats have been removed in order to reduce weight and make room for the heavier rear suspension and standard rear wheel steering. All Dakars will be equipped with Porsche’s eight speed PDK transmission. The rear spoilers and front hoods of all Dakars are made from lightweight carbon fiber. It weighs in at 1,605 kilograms and is 10 kilograms lighter than the Carrera 4 GTS.
Lamparter said that the car responds well to rally-driving techniques. It’s very easy to drive. You can use the gas pedal to steer the car, and you only need to make minimal steering inputs to get it in the right direction in snow.
He stated that the idea of a rally-ready 911 was around for a while. A prototype was built in 2012, but it was scrapped. It was discussed many times before it finally became clear that the time was right. The Porsche Safari models, built decades ago for rally racing, were a strong symbol of nostalgia.

Lamparter said, “You see a lot old models modified to Safaris.” We follow the tuners and competitors, and there is a huge fan base of Porsche customers who will modify cars or want cars like a Safari. We said that we needed it now.
However, the 911 Dakar is not an SUV.
Lamparter said, “No, never, definitely not.” You sit in the bucket seats of a 911. It’s like a 911 except that you are a bit higher. We call it zeitgeist. It has nothing to do the SUV trend. It was the right time to create a rally version of the 911.”
Moser said that although there is no plan to create another rally model after the 2,500 Dakars have been sold, it is possible.
