The Apple Watch Ultra is much larger than the Apple Watch Series 8. This is why you would choose it over the Series 8. There’s a reason it’s larger than the Series 8, and it’s quite different from the Series 8. Let’s look at the differences in the Apple Watch U and Series 8. These watches have many of the same features. However, the Ultra elevates it to a level that may cause some people to reconsider switching from a Garmin watch.

Apple Watch Ultra vs. Series 8: Design & Display
Apple Watch Ultra retains the same design principles as the original Apple Watch, which has a rectangular shape with rounded corners and edges. Apple made some improvements to the Ultra to improve its durability, including a raised rim around watch faces and a bar protecting the Digital Crown.

Only the Ultra is available in a size of 49mm. To carry a larger battery, the Ultra is thicker (14.4mm), than the Series 8 (10.7mm). The Ultra weighs more than 10g than the Series 8’s heaviest Ultra with a 45mm stainless-steel case.
The Series 8 is the same design as Series 7. However, the Series 8 features a slightly different design than Series 6. These changes include smaller bezels for larger displays and rounder case corners. Available in sizes 45mm and 41mm, the Series 8 is also available.
The Series 8 and Ultra have always-on displays. However, the Ultra’s brightness is at a maximum of 2,000 Nits. This is twice as bright as the Series 8 and one of the most prominent Apple Watches.
Apple Watch Ultra vs Series 8: Durability
Apple Watch has been extremely durable. The Series 8 is the same as the Series 7 and has a similar construction. Both Series 6 and Series 8 have thicker front crystal displays, making them more durable. The Series 8 has an IP6X dust resistance rating and a 50m water resistance rating.

The Apple Watch Ultra can be waterproof for up to 100 metres
However, the Apple Watch Ultra is quite a different device. It can withstand harsh conditions and treatments. To protect the display, the case is slightly elevated around it (which has sapphire front Crystals). There’s also a bar that protects the Digital Crown.
The Ultra is IP6X dust-resistant, just like the Series 8. But Apple takes it a step further. The Ultra has been certified to MIL–STD 810H military standards. This means that it can withstand extreme conditions such as altitude, temperature and rain. The Ultra is water-resistant to 100m and has a recreational diving limit of 40m.
