BMW owners can now use Android smartphones as fully functional vehicle keys

Digital Key Plus will be available for select Android devices starting . It offers locking, starting and other vehicle features.

BMW has moved beyond the remote keyfob and is also moving away from old-fashioned metal ignition keys. Digital Key Plus, a company app that turns certain Android-powered phones into fully integrated keys for BMW vehicles, is now available to owners of compatible smartphones.

fully-integrated and BMW are the same thing. They do everything a normal key does, such as unlocking/locking doors, starting engines, etc. BMW says that Digital Key Plus has additional functionality using ultra-wideband technology (UWB), which gives a localized radio signal and better security when it is close. BMW says that the system was refined with Google and partners, and the risk of jamming or intercepting the signal has been “virtually eradicated.”

Digital Key Plus automates the functionality of Digital Key, which has been in use by automakers for several years. Digital Key Plus devices allow you to start your car without having to place the phone on the wireless charging tray. The automated functions that the owner has set up, such as the exterior lighting of the vehicle when you approach it, work the same way as the standard remote.

Digital Key Plus was launched in 2021 for iPhones and Apple Watches. The app is not compatible with all Android phones. BMW currently lists Digital Key Plus for Samsung Galaxy S23+, Ultra, Google Pixel 7 Pro and older Samsung/Google devices running Android 13.1 and later.
