Tata Starbus Fuel Cell: After making a strong hold in electric vehicles, now Tata Motors is taking steps towards hydrogen-powered vehicles. On the last day of the ongoing Auto Expo 2023 in Greater Noida, Tata Motors has unveiled its Starbus Fuel Cell bus that runs on hydrogen fuel cells. It is a hydrogen-powered electric bus that the company first introduced in 2018.

Since this bus runs on hydrogen, the company claims that this bus has zero emissions. According to the company, after burning hydrogen in its engine, only water comes out as an emission. Due to the absence of mechanical engine in the bus, it does not make noise while running and the passengers get a completely silent travel experience.

Tata Motors claims that only 20 percent of the engine energy of a diesel-powered bus can be converted into power. While the fuel cell bus converts 40-60 percent of the energy into power, which is 3 times more efficient than a conventional bus. Because of this, a fuel cell bus saves up to 50 percent fuel compared to a diesel bus.

Tata’s fuel cell Starbus bus has a 30-seater. Four hydrogen fuel cells have been installed on the roof of this bus. Each fuel cell has a capacity of about 14.5 kg. The twin electric motors mounted on the rear axle of this bus produce a power output of about 186 kW and 1050 Newton meters of torque.

The fuel cell system of the bus is integrated with a lithium-ion battery. To make the controlling of the bus easy, hydraulic power steering, air dual circuit brakes and ABS have been used in it. 7 radial tubeless tires have been given in this bus. Whereas, its top speed is 70 km/h.
