Anti tobacco warnings will appear on OTT platforms
These messages will be similar to theaters and TV programs
New Delhi. On World No Tobacco Day, the Union Health Ministry has taken a significant step towards curbing tobacco consumption by notifying amended regulations under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2004. Under the new rule, it will now be mandatory to display anti-tobacco warnings on over-the-top (OTT) platforms as well. As it is currently shown in theaters and TV programs.
According to the new notification, publishers whose online curated content will be shown tobacco products or their use. They must give an anti-tobacco warning lasting at least 30 seconds at the beginning and middle of their programmes. Also, a static anti-tobacco health warning message will also have to be displayed at the bottom of the screen whenever tobacco products are shown during the programme.
Audio-visual disclaimer will appear
Also, according to the notification, an audio-video disclaimer lasting 20 seconds will also have to be shown at the beginning and middle of the programme. In this, viewers will have to be educated about the ill effects of tobacco use.

According to the notification, the anti-tobacco health warning given under clause (b) of sub-rule (1) should be clearly visible and legible. In this, tobacco causes cancer or tobacco is deadly should be written in black font in white background.
It is mandatory to display these anti-tobacco health warning messages in the language of the online content. According to a senior ministry official, the decision has been taken after extensive consultations with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and other stakeholders to ensure broad compliance.
