New Delhi. WhatsApp’s parent company Meta has banned 74,52,500 WhatsApp accounts in India. The company says that these were such accounts which were not following WhatsApp’s policy. Let us tell you that millions of WhatsApp users across the country were getting calls related to spam and fraud. The company has taken action on the basis of spam reports and complaints received from users.

Out of these, about 25,00,000 WhatsApp accounts were such that WhatsApp had taken action even before the consumers complained. According to the monthly report of WhatsApp published on June 1, between April 1 and April 30, all these WhatsApp accounts have been closed.

Biggest action of the year
Please tell that this is being told as the biggest action of this year by WhatsApp. Earlier, in the report released last month i.e. on May 1, WhatsApp had informed that WhatsApp has closed about 47 lakh accounts in the month of March, which were violating the rules.

Millions of content removed from Facebook and Instagram
Major action has also been taken on Meta’s social media apps Facebook and Instagram. Meta said it removed over 27 million pieces of content across 13 policies for Facebook and over 5.4 million across 12 policies for Instagram in India in April. Between April 1 and 30, 2023, Facebook received 8,470 reports through the Indian complaint mechanism, of which 2,225 have been resolved.

Meta said that in another 6,245 reports where special review was required, we reviewed the content in accordance with our policies and took action on a total of 1,244 reports. The remaining 5,001 reports were reviewed but not acted upon.” On Instagram, the company received 9,676 reports through the Indian complaint system. Of these, Meta provided users with a means to resolve their issues in 3,591 cases.

Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users will have to publish a monthly compliance report.

Meta said, “We measure the number of pieces of content (such as posts, photos, videos or comments). We take action to go against our standards. This action may include restricting certain portions of the content or completely removing such objectionable content in a way that affects the most users.”
