Nowadays, we use passwords to lock computers, laptops, mobiles indiscriminately. From email to Digi Locker and all digital documents are kept safe through password. Do you know why the first password was created on the computer, who created it and why it was created.

Now all of us have not one but many passwords, because from computer to mobile, they are opened with password only, so to open each mail box, password has to be entered. To operate your account online in the bank, you have to enter a password. In the current digital world, one cannot imagine without a password. It’s like a security. Do you know how much the world’s first password was made.(Image- ShutterStock)

In 1961, MIT computer science professor Fernando Corbato created the first digital password as Project Problem-Solver. Actually he made an operating system of computer, on which everyone wanted to work. Everyone then needed time for themselves on the computer. So he found a solution for time-sharing among all. To solve this problem, Roberto equipped the computer with a password. Created a different password for each person working on it. So that everyone can work on it at their own time. So in this way the world’s first password was created. Then this step became so popular that it became revolutionary in the coming times. Without it the electronic device could not be imagined. Although later, before his death, Coberto regretted a lot about the password. He died on 12 July 2019. He invented the computer password for the first time in 1960. He admitted that the password has started being misused through hacking. We need to move beyond passwords to preserve privacy in the digital age.(wiki commons)

Passwords were once one of our most trusted security measures, but when hacking started, it became clear that passwords are not that secure either. Fernando José “Corby” Corbato was an American computer scientist who made his name in the development of time-sharing operating systems. He also served in the Navy. (file photo)

Corbato left the Navy in 1946. Then enrolled in the California Institute of Technology. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics in 1950. In 1956, he received his PhD in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was here that he became a professor in 1965 and continued to work here till his retirement.(file photo)

Corbato is credited with the first use of passwords for secure access to files on a large computer system, although he later claimed that this primary security method had become outmoded and difficult to maintain. Corbato’s is also known as the “Corbato rule” for passwords. Corbato married programmer Isabel Blandford in 1962; He died in 1973. Later, Corbato became a victim of diabetes and due to complications of this disease, he died at the age of 93. (file photo)
